Airline Pilot Career Roadmap

Decision time.
What are the minimum requirements for a career as an Airline Pilot?

There are no minimum qualifications in order to start your training, although if you're being sponsored by an Airline, they'll usually want you to have 2 or more A Levels.

You'll need a Class One Medical before you start your training. These are done by an AME (Aeromedical Examiners).

Where do we start?

Pilot training is a long road and hopefully not too bumpy if you learn the basics well. First things first, you need to get in the cockpit and your hands on the controls of a flying machine. Flying Clubs and training schools have trial lessons where you can get hands on the controls and just see if you like flying first of all. From there you can start looking at the PPL course. Your trial flight instructor will give you all the information you need, with hopefully not too many acronyms.

Another way to get experience and an idea on whether or not you will enjoy an airline career is our SimPilot Training Scheme. Amateur pilots are trained from scratch to airline standards in our Airbus A320 Flight Simulator; covering all the procedures that any Airbus Captain and First Officer use in their day job. It is a great way to have a grounding before committing to a full training course with all the expense that will incur.

Private Pilot License Training

Whether you just want to fly for fun, or want to be an airline pilot; this is the big start point for your journey. The private pilot license will allow you to fly in VFR conditions (Visual Flight Rules) and take at least 45 flying hours.

There’s a lot of detail to take in during that including, Rules of the Air, Navigation, Weather, radio procedures and of course flying the aircraft. Your first big achievement will be your first solo, before continuing with navigation training and finishing with the Skills Test. You can then fly unsupervised on your own and take passengers. Experienced pilots will tell you that this first bit of paper is a license to learn!
